- Job Summary
Public Defenders are responsible for representing accused individuals in a court of law on behalf of the state. Public Defenders are publicly funded attorneys who represent those who may can not afford private legal representation. Public Defenders will demonstrate their knowledge and experience of legal practice inside a court of law. Public Defenders are responsible for maintaining casefiles, managing heavy workloads and ensuring each individual represented has a reasonable and fair trial.
The State Bar Exam is waived for all Public Defender Applicants, with the understanding that if an applicant withdraws their application before being appointed to the office OR leaves the office within six months of being hired, their State Bar License will be deactivated until such time as the testing fee is paid
- Minimum requirements for Public Defenders:
- Possess and demonstrate integrity
- Demonstrated ability to use good judgment and problem solving
- Capacity for empathy and compassion
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to be resourceful and show initiative
- Demonstrating assertiveness
- Ability to work in a team environment

- Application - Candidates will be required to complete an application towards the job. ((This includes OOC portions))
- Background check - A background check will be completed by the department
- In person interview This will be conducted with a Judge to determine the applicant's English level and general law knowledge.
- State Bar Examination - If a candidate is selected to proceed based on application and background check, they will receive a state bar examination.
- Certification - If candidates pass the exam, they will be certified as a State Bar Attorney. A candidate may have three (3) chances to obtain a State Bar License. If they cannot pass after three tries, their application will be removed from consideration.
- Conclusion - Once a candidate is State Bar certified, they will be appointed a Public Defender
